At Washingborough Academy, sustainability is more than a topic—it’s a way of life. We are committed to equipping our students with the knowledge and skills to make a lasting impact on the future of our planet.
Every child receives at least one hour of focused sustainability education each week, embedded across six key themes. These sessions not only teach vital lessons about environmental stewardship but also inspire a deep connection to nature and an understanding of the role we all play in creating a sustainable future.
Our approach to sustainability is hands-on and immersive. The journey from field to fork is as short as it gets, with students growing much of the produce that is cooked in our school kitchen. By cultivating their own fruits and vegetables, children gain first-hand experience of sustainable food practices. Any food waste—minimised through targeted learning and a school culture that prioritises reducing waste—is returned to the compost heap or wormery, completing a virtuous cycle.
Our school grounds are a hub of sustainable activity. We boast:
- On-site beehives supporting biodiversity and teaching about the importance of pollinators.
- A diverse orchard featuring 19 Lincolnshire varieties of apple.
- A 20-meter polytunnel and a 300-square-meter organic kitchen garden.
- The use of saved heritage and heirloom seeds to preserve biodiversity.
- Dedicated gardening plots for every class, fostering ownership and responsibility.
Through these efforts, we address critical issues such as the 6% of global greenhouse gas emissions caused by food waste, while instilling values of care and conservation.
Sustainability is not confined to our school grounds—it is a message our students take home, inspiring their families and communities to act as climate-conscious, environmentally aware global citizens. At Washingborough Academy, we are proud to nurture a generation that not only understands the challenges of sustainability but is empowered to meet them head-on.
