Reading for Pleasure

Reading for Pleasure at Washingborough Academy

At Washingborough Academy, we promote and celebrate reading across all areas of the curriculum. We are passionate about fostering a love of reading in every child, helping them to become lifelong readers.

Our Library

Our library is a calm space where children can access high-quality texts that promote protected characteristics. Each week, children visit the library with their class and select a ‘Reading for Pleasure’ book to take home and enjoy with their families.

Children as Readers

All our teachers are not only educators but also avid readers who share their personal reading experiences with their class’s. By doing so, they positively influence children’s enthusiasm for reading and increase the frequency with which they read both at home and at school. Teachers get to know their classes reading habits in various ways including, during special events like World Book Day and National Poetry Day as well as day to day reading conversations. This helps them recommend and select books they know their class will love. Each class has a Reading Ambassador who plays a crucial role in fostering a love of reading among all students. Reading Ambassadors meet once a term to share ideas on how to further promote reading and recommend their favourite books and authors to the school.

Author Visits

To kick off our ‘Reading Week,’ we had the pleasure of hosting local author Gareth Baker at our school. He delivered a whole school assembly where he shared his love of reading and emphasised the importance of reading at home. Gareth then worked with each class, exploring some of his books and engaging children in related activities. Throughout Reading Week, we participated in various activities, giving children the opportunity to share their all-time favourite books, create artwork linked to a story, and even collaborate on a whole-school ‘Hidden Story.’
