“Teaching kids how to feed themselves and how to live in a community responsibly is the centre of an education.”
– Alice Walters
Our unique Food Education curriculum, which is recognised as excellent practice both nationally and internationally, allows us to teach our children about the foods they eat, how to cook and the importance of food socially, culturally and environmentally as well as it’s positive effect food can have on our own physical and mental health and well-being.
In our EYFS setting and KS1, we teach our children about food through TastEd which provides a fun and exciting platform for children to have the confidence to try new foods and recognise the role that all of our senses play when eating. Our school have pioneered this sensory based food education programme and we are proud that it has been recognised by the Department for Education as an effective method to improve educational practice.
Our Sensory Food Education curriculum is being used as a case study by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (UNFAO) as best practice for their Schools Food & Nutrition Education programme – http://bit.ly/3ET8O5y
We have our own 300m² kitchen garden, raised beds, a Lincolnshire Heritage orchard, an apiary and fee-range chickens to engage the children in the issues around sustainability and sourcing local food. We also have well-established links with farmers across the whole of the United Kingdom.
Food education and healthy lifestyles are incredibly important to us as a school. Each class cooks once a week and we are proud of how adventurous and skilled our young chefs become! As well as this, we also have a Snack Shack where, each week, a group of children prepare a healthy snack that is then sold a break time on a Wednesday. This not only provides our children with healthy food, it also enables them to learn fundamental life skills and develop an excellent awareness of food and the food choices they will make.

The Digital Food Education
The Digital Food Education project explores how teachers can use digital technology to help run exciting food education projects in school. These practical food projects will also equip pupils and teachers with important digital skills to record and communicate their learning. The project brings together experience from Austria, Czechia, Slovenia and the UK. Please follow the link below to find out more!
